Landscaping in Doveton
Landscaping, retaining walls, decking, paving and concreting across Springvale and Melbourne's south-east - measured on site, quoted in writing, built by one team.
Doveton was built in the 1950s and 1960s as a planned estate for workers at the nearby factories, and its housing stock and block sizes still reflect that. The blocks are flat and generous by modern standards, which gives real room to build something worthwhile, but the original infrastructure has reached the end of its life - narrow single driveways, cracked paths and back gardens that have never been properly regraded. Because the ground is flat, falls have to be constructed rather than found, and drainage is the first thing we look at. Doveton is also a suburb where staged work makes sense, and we are happy to build a yard in phases against one overall plan. Call MG Landscaping on 0423 422 866.

OUR STORY
Doveton went up in the 1950s and 1960s as purpose-built housing for the workers at the factories along the Princes Highway corridor, and the estate planning of that era left something genuinely valuable: large, flat, regular blocks. Compared with a modern estate rear yard, a Doveton backyard has room to do a proper job - a real alfresco, a decent lawn, garden beds with actual depth to them. What has not lasted is the concrete. Original driveways here are around sixty years old, poured thin, mostly unreinforced by today's standards, and typically only wide enough for a single car, which is why driveway replacement is the most common job we quote in the suburb. Paths and rear yard slabs are usually the same age and in the same condition. The other thing we hear consistently is budget staging, and Doveton is a suburb where building a yard in phases against a single plan works well.

SERVICES WE OFFER IN Doveton
There is almost no natural fall on a Doveton block, and that shapes the technical side of every job here. Water will not leave on its own, so every hard surface has to be laid at a constructed fall of around 1 in 100 taking it away from the house and to a legal discharge point, and any lawn area has to be graded rather than simply levelled. Where a back garden has been flat and undrained for decades, we usually install agricultural drain wrapped in geotextile through the low points before any surface goes down, because the alternative is a new patio holding water against the brickwork every July. Replacing an old driveway properly means excavating the old slab out entirely rather than pouring over it, compacting at least 100 millimetres of class 3 crushed rock, setting SL72 mesh on bar chairs, and cutting control joints at 3 to 4 metre spacing. Widening a single drive to a double almost always means a new or widened crossover, which needs a City of Casey vehicle crossover permit. On the generous blocks here there is usually room for a machine to work, which keeps excavation costs down compared with the tighter suburbs.

Why choose us in Doveton
We are ten minutes up the road in Springvale, which matters when you want someone to actually turn up to quote and then turn up again to build. We price by measurement and put the numbers in writing, including the parts that are easy to hide - excavation, base depth, spoil removal, crossover permit - so you can compare quotes on the same basis. Where budget is the constraint, we will tell you honestly what sequence to build in so that nothing has to come back out later, and we are comfortable doing a yard in two or three stages against one plan rather than pushing a single large job. Maung Maung runs the work himself, so the same team is on your block from the first day to the last. MG Landscaping operates under ABN 98 441 884 074 and carries public liability insurance. SERVICES WE OFFER IN Doveton
We work across the whole suburb, from the streets around Power Avenue through to the pockets closer to the Princes Highway and the Endeavour Hills boundary. The original estate streets in the centre of Doveton hold the oldest housing and the most driveway and path replacement work, along with back gardens that have never been regraded. Toward the highway end, noise and privacy screening comes into more of the briefs, so planting and screening get more attention in the design. On the eastern side toward Endeavour Hills the ground starts to pick up a little fall, which changes how the drainage is handled. Wherever you are in Doveton, the generous block sizes mean there is usually more that can be done with the space than owners expect.

Landscaping In Doveton
A typical single driveway of around 40 square metres averages $4,000 to $6,500 in plain reinforced concrete, or $5,500 to $8,000 in exposed aggregate. Breaking out and carting away the existing slab adds roughly $30 to $50 per square metre on average. Widening a single drive to a double also needs a new crossover with a City of Casey permit, which is quoted separately. Most Doveton driveways are original to the house and past their useful life, so full replacement is usually better value than patching. Every job is unique, so you get a written fixed figure before any work starts.
Yes, and in Doveton it is one of the more common ways we work. The important thing is to have one overall plan first, so the drainage and levels are designed as a single system even though the money goes out over two or three phases. That way stage two does not require pulling out part of stage one. We will tell you which elements have to come first, which is usually drainage, retaining and anything requiring machine access. Building area by area with no plan is what costs the most in the long run.
Built falls and installed drainage, rather than topsoil. On a flat block there is no natural gradient to work with, so the lawn area needs regrading to a constructed fall and hard surfaces need to be laid at around 1 in 100 away from the house. Agricultural drain wrapped in geotextile through the low points, connected to a legal discharge, deals with what the surface falls cannot. It is the least visible part of a quote and the part that determines whether the yard works.
For the concrete inside your boundary, generally not. For the crossover between the kerb and your property line, the City of Casey requires a vehicle crossover permit for any new or widened access, with set requirements for width, profile and sightlines. We check what applies to your address and lodge the application as part of the job. Pouring a crossover without approval risks being ordered to remove it at your own cost.
Drainage and levels, every time, followed by anything that needs machine access while the yard is still open. Surfaces such as paving, turf and garden beds should come after those, because they all sit on top of decisions made underneath. Driveways can generally be done independently at any stage since they sit at the front of the property. We will sequence the whole thing for you at the site visit, whether or not you build it all at once.
We cover all of Doveton, including the original estate streets around Power Avenue, the pockets near the Princes Highway and the eastern edge toward Endeavour Hills. We also work in Endeavour Hills, Hallam, Berwick and Narre Warren North, so a job near the boundary is no problem at all. Our base is in Springvale, roughly ten minutes away.
